It is the largest vegetables and fruits wholesale market in Sri Lanka. The Dambulla Economic Centre is located on the Kandy – Jaffna Highway in Dambulla just one kilometer away from the Dambulla Cave Temple. The Economic Centre was established in 1999 as an assembling centre where harvest from the surrounding villages and various parts of the country is brought in for sale and distribution to other parts of the country. It operates 24 hours daily.
The Dambulla Economic centre is a hive of activity with a lot of noise, crowd and vehicles. Men carrying huge bags on their backs and on carts are a common sight at the market. The economic center is fully owned by the Ministry of Rural Economy. A Management Trust has been appointed to control the activities of the Economic Centre.
