Kadireshan Kovil

In the history of Anuradhapura kingdom the traces of Hindu influences mingled with Buddhist culture is seen sometimes. Sri Lankans have a mixture of Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. And sometimes the same god is worshipped by both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. Sri Kadiresan temple also known as Kadiresan Kovil is such an example find in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. It is situated very close to Jayanthi Viharaya Buddhist temple.

Kadiresan Kovil is a large temple which is very well decorated by statues of gods. Its roof too is covered with plaster sculptures of various Hindu gods like in most other Hindu temples in the country. The sculptured figures of gods are featured with their main characteristics, and sometimes in typical positions. The gods sculptured who are  talking to the animals or feeding the poor provide examples for such characteristics. The Kovil is regularly visited by both Buddhists and Hindus of the vicinity.
