Perfect destination for hikers and climbers
Situated a few kilometers north of Sigiriya is a towering rock known as Pidurangala which is a popular hiking spot. Pidurangala is a 200 meter tall massive rock formation which has an interesting history closely related to Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The name “Pidurangala” meaning offered piles of Gold is an important place for Buddhists which date back to the first and second centuries.
There is far less to see on this site and less crowded than Sigiriya. If you are into adventure it is worth climbing the Pidurangala rock as it is a more strenuous hike than climbing Sigiriya. Hiking along the manmade staircase and path, it will take between thirty to forty minutes to reach the top of the rock. Since the Pidurangala rock is slightly lower than Sigiriya it is considered as the best viewing spot where you can enjoy 360-degree views of the Sigiriya rock and the surrounding. Pidurangala is also a popular spot for sunrise. It is highly recommended that climbers enjoy the sunrise or sunset at Pidurangala. The entrance gates are open between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. but visitors are permitted to stay longer.
As you enter at the base of Pidurangala Rock is a temple, the Pidurangala Sigiri Rajamaha Viharaya. You need to keep your knees and shoulders covered and remove footwear as the entry to the trail is through a temple. Halfway through the hike you reach the remaining of the Royal Cave Temple. Up to this point the path is well maintained and the climb is easy. A rock wall and a reclining Buddha statue can be seen inside the temple. It is only from this point onwards the hike becomes challenging because you need to find your own path to the top over some large rocks and boulders. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear. Plastic and polythene are not permitted on the hike but make sure you take water. You will need a torch or flashlight if you are hiking at sunrise or sunset. Once you reach the top you will not regret doing the strenuous climb to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding. Climbing the Pidurangala rock is one awesome experience for nature and adventure lovers.
